And we’re going to visit another amazing tourist spot in Lombardy. Yep, we’re talking about Lecco – not so popular place like Como, not so crowdy (and not so amazing you can probably say). But it is amazing, we think at some points Lecco is cooler than Como with all its beauty and tourist stuff like funicular or little airplane. Here you can find things which you might miss at any other crowdy tourist places like appeasement, calm and silence.
The first thing you see when you get there by train is the birds street art at the outlet of the main station. The most impressive thing in our humble opinion is a little depressive bird with a lead on its paw. TripAtom doesn’t know exactly what this bird means, but we guess it’s probably about every tourist falling into the trap of city’s beauty and now he is not going to come back to his homeland). It’s just an assumption of our experience of visiting Lecco. Anyway, other birds are also cool and maybe you will find them more attractive than a sad one.
The next incredible street art you will find a bit farther of a main station is our so called “Megatron robot”. It looks like Hollywood scene in miniature with explosions, shootouts and Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox running away from the enemies (not, so sad like a bird, huh?).
You will definitely notice that this place is not so tourist by only 10 minutes being there. We saw none of the trappings of mass tourism: no postcard displays cluttering up the pavements and best of all, no tacky souvenirs, no tour buses. The town lives by its own style which is more business than tourist: families are enjoying a day by walking along streets. There were babies, toddlers, parents, grandparents, groups of friends, lovers and people messing about on their boats. Nobody troubles you and nobody cares, and this is awesome in comparison with Como, for example.
Streets are so Italian
Lecco streets don’t stand out from other Italian cities streets and if you are a big fan of them then you’ll love them too: narrow, cozy, old with cafes, ice cream shops and everything you need. Actually almost every street has a beautiful view on one of the mountains and it looks like you’re in the hollow and mountains are around you. By the way, it’s awesome to stay in Lecco for some days and catch an abundant rainy day to look how this city comes to life – everywhere you’ll find streams and you’ll love watching waterfalls from the rock. For sure, you’ll remember this moment. Anyway, at Lecco you have to see and enter Basilica di San Nicolò. You’ll not expect from outside and inside Basilica looks so rich and big. The Basilica is dedicated to the Saint Patron of sailors and has undergone different renovations since it was founded in the VIIth century. The Campanile (Bell Tower) is 96 m. high, and it’s the symbol of Lecco.
The lakeside promenade at Lecco is one of the most beautiful and pedestrian friendly, we’ve ever walked on. When you come downhill from the train station and arrive at one of the two main squares, you are right on the lakeshore and the tree-lined promenade extends as far as the eye can see. The coolest thing is that there are so many trees and no matter how hot or sunny it is, you can keep walking in a shade. Outside of town, the drop to the water was steeper but on the crescent-shaped stretch in the town center you could perch right on the edge of the paved slope and really enjoy the breeze from the lake. For those who like to feed the animals everywhere on their paths, you can easily feed some swans. Be aware, some of them are extremely impudent and can tweak you unexpectedly hard. Sometimes a fair is running at the promenade with tons of cute things for selling. Walking, taking photographs or just sitting and taking in the gorgeous views, was totally relaxing experience and all credit to Lecco for providing such a lovely and functional promenade.
What was the most impressive for tripAtom?
We were impressed by such incredible things in Lecco like the rock, almost a flood from anywhere if you get a rainy day, lots of benches and the feeling you definitely want to come back here sometime.
The huge rock which you can find at the end of waterfront way is really stunning. You can look and admire it by hours. There is a cage in the rock and if you have optics it will be interesting for you to look more closely. Also at the end of waterfront way there are peaceful lonely benches and almost always nobody is there. Take a seat, relax and enjoy the silence.
There are lots and lots of benches, ensuring that when you need to take a break or have a little impromptu picnic, there is going to be somewhere to sit. We walked as far as the next ferry stop outside of Lecco and the promenade continued all the way.
How about a stream in the center, huh? Lecco does have this option. We guess it’s incredible to live in an apartment facing the stream, drinking coffee in the morning and listening to the sound of water. Every day you hear this lovely sound and probably it’s like the balm for the soul.
Now you know enough to get motivated and travel to Lecco by yourself). TripAtom always wishes you the best travel experience and never stop discover new cities and places!
